Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra
Dr. Alfred E. Sturgis
The conductor of the orchestra is Dr. Alfred E. Sturgis, who also conducts the North Carolina Master Chorale,
Longleaf Opera, and the Carolina Ballet
The Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra is a professional orchestra that hires from 30-60 musicians per concert. The size of the
orchestra is contingent upon the instrumentation requirements of the compositions programmed. The musicians typically come from
Rocky Mount, Greenville, Washington, Winterville, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Goldsboro, New Bern, Reidsville, Butner, and Fayetteville. Some musicians have come from as far as Virginia and Greensboro to play with the orchestra.
