The Tar River Young Artist Competition is an annual competition that is open to North Carolina music students aged 10 through 18.
Pianists compete every year, with strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, vocalists, and guitarists competing alternating years. The winner of the competition performs with the orchestra and is awarded a $250.00 scholarship to be used for further study. Each contestant must perform a movement of an approved selection with accompaniment that also has an orchestral accompaniment
