COMPETITION

The Tar River Young Artist Competition is an annual competition that is open to North Carolina music students aged 10 through 18.  Pianists compete every year, with strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, vocalists, and guitarists competing alternating years. The winner of the competition  performs with the orchestra and is awarded a $250.00 scholarship to be used for further study. Each contestant must perform a movement of an approved selection with accompaniment that also has an orchestral accompaniment

Rules:
 
  • The next competition will be on May 2, 2009.
  • Applications must be postmarked by April 4, 2009. (ClickHERE for an application to print out and mail in.)
  • Applications must be accompanied by a $25 non-refundable fee.
  • The contestant will be responsibile for providing his/her own accompanist for the audition.
  • Memorization is strongly encouraged, but not required.
  • The contestant must provide three copies of the music for the judges: either a piano score or a copy of the soloist's music. Measures must be numbered.
  • Each contestant will be assigned a specific audition time.
  • Judges' decision will be final.
  • There shall be no repeat scholarship winners.
  • The competition in 2009 will be limited to  PIANISTS.

    Carter Coleman is a 14 year old home-school student from Raleigh. He began his violin studies at the age of 4 in the Meredith College Suzuki program. He has been an active member of the Philharmonic Association orchestras over the past 5 years, and has served as Concertmaster, Principal of Second Violins, and Associate Concertmaster. He has been a winner in the Raleigh Music Club competition.

    Carter enjoys playing a variety of music and has performed with his twin brother Wyatt for the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of History, and the Wake County Historic Preservation Society. Carter is a student of David Friedlander, Associate Concertmaster of the North Carolina Symphony
