RECENT CONCERT THIS SEASON

The Tar River Swing Band is a working dance band.  They are under the direction of Jonathan Wacker, percussion professor at East Carolina University.    The band is comprised of 18 instrumentalists and several vocalists.  The band does one or two concerts per year, plus numerous gigs in central and eastern North Carolina.  The band has several CDs available.

Before moving to North Carolina, Dr. Wacker was the resident drummer/percussionist for the MGM and Harrah’s Hotel and Casino Orchestras.  In that position, he had the opportunity to perform with a wide variety of artists including Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Debbie Reynolds, Rosemary Clooney and many more.

As a jazz artist, Dr. Wacker has performed or recorded with internationally renowned artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Milt Hinton, Clark Terry, Plas Johnson, Harry Allen, and more.

He can be heard on CD with the Dominic Spera Big Band, the Bob Alberti Quartet, and "Trumpet Summit" with Vince DiMartino, Al Vizzutti and Bobby Shew.  Dr. Wacker endorses Zildjian Cymbals and Vic Firth sticks and mallets.

 

 

Jonathan Wacker has been filling the drum set chair with the Tar River Swing Band for the past 4 years and has recently taken over direction of the band.  He has been the Director of Percussion studies at East Carolina University for the past eleven years and performs with the Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra and with various other jazz groups, chamber ensembles and orchestras in Eastern North Carolina.
