The Tar River Young Artist Competition is an annual competition that is open to North Carolina music students aged 10 through 18. Pianists compete every other year, with instrumentalists such as strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, vocalists, and guitarists competing on the alternating years. The winner of the competition performs with the orchestra and is awarded a $250.00 scholarship to be used for further study. Each contestant must perform a movement of an approved selection with accompaniment that also has an orchestral accompaniment

Rules:

The date of the next competition will be May 14, 2011

The postmark deadline for applications will be April 23, 2011.

Applications must be accompanied by a $25 non-refundable fee.

The contestant will be responsibile for providing his/her own accompanist for the audition.

Memorization is strongly encouraged, but not required.

The contestant must provide three copies of the music for the judges: either a piano score or a copy of the soloist's music. Measures must be numbered.

Each contestant will be assigned a specific audition time.

Judges' decision will be final.

There shall be no repeat scholarship winners.

The competition in 2011 will be limited to pianists.

2010 Winner: Rebecca Telford-Marx

Rebecca Telford-Marx is a native of Durham,NC and is a 17-year-old student at Charles E. Jordan High School. She began her study of violin as a 4-year-old with Marsha Edwards and subsequently with Dorothy Kitchen, Director of the Duke University String School. Since May of 2005, Rebecca has studied with Eric Pritchard of Duke University's Ciompi Quartet. In September of 2009, Rebecca began to study piano with Susie Greenberg.

In 2010 Rebecca was named a winner in the Durham Symphony Young Artists Competition and performed twice as a soloist, with the Symphony, under the baton of Maestro William Henry Curry. Also in 2010, she served as Assistant Principal Violinist for the NC Symphony All-Star Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Grant Llewellyn. In recent years, Rebecca has played with the Piedmont Youth Orchestra, the Duke University String School Orchestra the Mallarme Youth Chamber Orchestra. With her sister Emily, a cellist, and long-time friend Elana Jaffe she has founded a piano trio which recently performed the Shostakovitch Trio in E minor at the Carol Woods Retirement Community and at the Fletcher Opera Theatre, in Raleigh, under the auspices of the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild (RCMG). The performance was called “impressive” in a review by the Classical Voice of North Carolina.

Rebecca is a frequent accompanist and soloist at her church, First Presbyterian, in Durham.

For the past 5 summers, Rebecca has traveled to Cummington, Massachusetts to participate in the well known Greenwood Summer Music Camp and has studied there with, among others, Rebecca Fischer, first violinist of the internationally known Chiara String Quartet

Rebecca is also an avid writer, current member of the Jordan High School varsity soccer team and former member of the Jordan High School basketball team. She is an active member of the Jordan Chapters of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Math Club
